2016 Biennial Conference – Save The Date
The 2016 MIA biennial conference will be held over one day at the Intercontinental Malta Hotel on 25 November 2016. This flagship event attracts a number of prominent local and foreign speakers and is open to all MIA members. Preparations are well underway to attract the best possible speaker line-up, and the Hon. Prof. Edward Scicluna has already been confirmed as one of the participants.
This year’s MIA conference will be of particular importance in view of all the recent political, economic and technical developments, all of which have had a profound effect on accountants. All this turmoil has prompted questions about what should be the present and most importantly, the future role of accountants. The conference will debate these concerns.
Topics addressed will include how the Institute is preparing its members to deal with topical issues like Brexit, the future of commerce, GAPSME, the audit reform, prevention of money laundering and taxation, among others, so that MIA members can feel confident that by attending the event they will be gaining invaluable knowledge about present and future challenges that are or will be impacting them.
2016 Annual Reception
The customary Christmas event was not held in 2015 so its budget was used to organise a bigger and more inclusive summer event. This was a planned decision, which followed some long deliberation. Our past social events could only host a limited number of members mainly due to budgetary constraints and also the size of venues available. Understandably, the ‘first come first served’ policy left many members disappointed and we felt we should address this issue by finding a sustainable solution. On this footing we decided to skip the winter event but extended participation to the 2016 summer to all members.
The 2016 summer event was held at Fort St Elmo and was attended by some 700 members. A satisfaction survey completed by 130 attendees indicated that the stand-up reception formula proved to be very successful for networking. Looking forward it is expected that this formula will be retained and the event will become an annual feature on the institute’s social calendar.
The MIA partnered with Hospice Malta and collected €1,330 in donations from the members present, which the Institute has rounded up to €1,500. Hospice Malta provides free-of-charge palliative care for more than 1,000 patients annually, while also supporting their families.
The Institute’s Annual General Meeting
The Malta Institute of Accountants held its 52nd Annual General Meeting at the Tower Training Centre on 7 July 2016. Thirty four members of the Institute, which membership now numbers close to 2,700, attended the meeting. MIA President, Mr Franco Azzopardi highlighted the work done by the Institute over the previous 12 months, while MIA Treasurer, Mr David Delicata, tabled the Financial Statements for the year ended 31 December 2015 and gave an overview of the salient financial indicators. The President thanked outgoing council member Mr Hilary Galea Lauri who was not seeking re-election after 19 years on council. Mr Azzopardi thanked him for his dedication and contribution towards the Institute and the local profession.
The members present approved the motions that were tabled such that the following have now become resolutions: vision, mission and values, changes to the statute and the bye-laws with respect to members and the new disciplinary bye-laws.
After the vote the following members were elected to the council: Mr Fabio Axisa, Partner – PwC, Mr Christopher Balzan, Director – EY, Mr David Delicata, Director – Deloitte, Mr Anthony Doublet, Director – EY, Mr Jonathan Dingli, Director – KPMG, Dr Ivan Grixti, Lecturer – University of Malta and Mr Stephen Paris, Director – Deloitte.
These elected members join seven other council members who were elected at the 2015 Annual General Meeting: Mr Franco Azzopardi, Mr Etienne Borg Cardona, Mr Simon Flynn, Ms Maria Micallef, Mr Noel Mizzi, Mr William Spiteri Bailey, and Mr Franz R. Wirth.
At a subsequent meeting of the council, Mr Franco Azzopardi was confirmed as President, Mr William Spiteri Bailey as Vice-president, Mr Fabio Axisa as Secretary and Mr David Delicata as Treasurer.
